Insect Overview

Adelgids are small, sap-sucking insects that primarily infest coniferous trees, particularly spruce trees. These insects belong to the Aphididae family, though they resemble tiny aphids in appearance. Their feeding can lead to the weakening of trees, resulting in yellowing, stunted growth, and premature needle drop.

Adelgids tend to cluster on the needles, where they insert their needle-like mouthparts to extract sap. This feeding behavior weakens the tree, making it more susceptible to other diseases and environmental stress. Infestations are typically most severe during spring or fall when the insects are more active.

Left untreated, Adelgids can cause significant damage to spruce, fir, and pine trees. Early identification and application of treatment are essential to managing the infestation and minimizing damage to the trees.

Symptoms

  • Yellowing or browning of spruce tree needles.
  • Premature needle drop or dieback.
  • Weakened tree health, making it more susceptible to other diseases.

Recommended Treatment

Vivid II can be applied to treat Adelgids by using it as a systemic insecticide. Be sure to follow the application instructions for dosage based on tree size. Apply the treatment during early spring or late fall when Adelgids are more vulnerable. This will help control their population and reduce tree damage.

Treated Species

Many tree species may be affected by Adelgids Treatment Guide. However, Vivid II is only approved for use on the following trees per the EPA product label.

  • Ornamental Trees (including forest, ornamental, non-crop-bearing trees, and woody shrubs)
