Insect Overview

The Engraver Beetle is a wood-boring pest that primarily affects coniferous trees, such as pines and spruce. These beetles lay their eggs in the bark, and the larvae tunnel into the wood, causing significant damage to the tree. Over time, their feeding weakens the tree, making it more vulnerable to other diseases and environmental stressors.

Engraver Beetles typically infest trees that are already stressed due to factors like drought, injury, or overcrowding. As the larvae tunnel through the tree, they create intricate patterns, or engravings, in the wood, which is how the pest got its name. The damage can cause the tree to decline rapidly if not addressed.

Effective control of Engraver Beetles involves early detection and timely treatment. If left unchecked, these beetles can kill weakened trees and spread to healthy trees in the area.

Symptoms

  • Visible holes and sap flow at the top of the tree.
  • Discolored or dead patches of bark.
  • Weakened tree health, with reduced foliage and growth.

Recommended Treatment

Apply Vivid-II as a treatment for Engraver Beetles. It is most effective when applied in the spring, before the larvae hatch and begin feeding. Ensure proper dosage based on tree size and infestation severity. Repeat treatments as necessary.

Treated Species

Many tree species may be affected by Engraver Beetle Treatment Guide. However, Vivid II is only approved for use on the following trees per the EPA product label.

  • Ornamental Trees (including forest, ornamental, non-crop-bearing trees, and woody shrubs)
