Insect Overview

Scale insects are small, sap-sucking pests that attach themselves to the bark, branches, and leaves of trees and shrubs. These insects feed on the plant’s sap, weakening the plant and causing stress. Over time, the feeding behavior can cause leaf yellowing, reduced growth, and in severe cases, tree death.

Scale insects are typically divided into two types: armored scale and soft scale. Both types excrete a sticky substance called honeydew, which can attract the growth of sooty mold, further damaging the plant. Scale infestations can be particularly damaging to young or stressed trees, which are less able to recover from feeding damage.

Early identification and treatment are essential to prevent large-scale infestations. Regular monitoring of susceptible plants, especially during the warmer months when scale insects are most active, helps in managing infestations before they cause irreversible damage.

Symptoms

  • Yellowing leaves or leaf drop caused by sap-feeding.
  • Visible scale insects attached to branches, stems, or leaves.
  • Black sooty mold growth due to honeydew secretion.
  • Premature tree dieback in severe infestations.

Recommended Treatment

Apply Vivid-II as a treatment for scale insects. Ensure the treatment is applied during the dormant season or in early spring before new growth appears. Follow the application instructions for proper dosage. Regular monitoring and reapplication may be necessary to manage scale populations.

Treated Species

Many tree species may be affected by Scale Treatment Guide. However, Vivid II is only approved for use on the following trees per the EPA product label.

  • Ornamental Trees (including forest, ornamental, non-crop-bearing trees, and woody shrubs)
