Snipper® Timing Guide
Sweet gum bud starting to break open — this is when to inject Snipper.
When to Inject Snipper in Sweet Gum Trees
Inject Snipper when the sweet gum bud is just starting to break open. The bud scales will be separating and you will see the tip of the bud beginning to open up. Do not wait until the bud is fully open.
Bud Stage Guide
| Stage | What You See | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — Dormant | Buds are small, tight, and closed. | Wait |
| 2 — Swelling | Buds are getting larger but still closed. | Check daily |
| 3 — Just Breaking Open | Bud scales separating, tip of bud just starting to open. | Inject now |
| 4 — Bud Open | Bud is open, flower clusters visible. | Too late |
| 5 — Leaf Out | Leaves fully out, gum balls forming. | Too late |
Things to Keep in Mind
Don't go by the calendar. Timing depends on the weather that year. A warm winter can push bud break weeks earlier than normal.
Check the whole tree. Buds on upper branches and south-facing sides tend to open first. Inject when most buds are at Stage 3.
The window is short. Once the buds start opening it can go fast — sometimes just a few days. Check daily once you see swelling.
