Insect Overview

The White Pine Weevil is a destructive pest that primarily affects white pine trees. The larvae of this weevil burrow into the tree’s stem and feed on the inner bark, causing significant damage. This can lead to reduced growth, deformed trees, and even tree death if the infestation is severe.

White Pine Weevil larvae attack young pine trees, feeding on the tissues just beneath the bark, and can also damage older trees. The adult weevils lay their eggs in the terminal buds, and the hatched larvae tunnel down into the trunk. As they feed, they create visible holes and damage the tree’s vascular system.

Early detection and treatment of a White Pine Weevil infestation are crucial to minimizing the damage. Regular monitoring of tree health, particularly in areas with a history of weevil infestation, can help identify problems early on.

Symptoms

  • Visible holes and sap flow at the top of the tree (where the larvae are feeding).
  • Deformed or crooked growth, especially in the tree’s terminal leader (top shoot).
  • Discoloration of the needles and premature needle drop.
  • Weakened tree health, leading to dieback and stunted growth.

Recommended Treatment

Apply Vivid-II as a treatment for White Pine Weevil infestations. It is most effective when applied in early spring before the larvae hatch and begin feeding. Ensure proper dosage based on tree size and infestation severity. Reapply as necessary to control the infestation.

Treated Species

Many tree species may be affected by White Pine Weevil Treatment Guide. However, Vivid II is only approved for use on the following trees per the EPA product label.

  • Ornamental Trees (including forest, ornamental, non-crop-bearing trees, and woody shrubs)
